Remodeled and New Openings Reshape Calgary’s Hotel Scene

2018 is already proving to be a boom for new hotel openings across Canada, and in Calgary, it’s no different. Between the recently revamped Hyatt Regency Calgary and the new developments from Marriott, Westin and Group Germain brands, the city is slated to grow its hotel inventory by 1,500 guest rooms by 2020 – a boon for meeting planners considering this vibrant, welcoming destination. Here’s what has, or will soon be coming online:

Hyatt Regency Calgary, Regency Club Level

Hyatt Regency, Calgary - Open

The Hyatt Regency Calgary recently announced the completion of an extensive renovation of its 355 guestrooms and executive level Regency Club lounge. The hotel’s guestrooms have been transformed into more sophisticated and contemporary spaces.

Guests can choose from double queen, king or corner king accommodations — each with large workstations, sitting areas, a 65-inch high definition television, locked safe, mini-refrigerator, Keurig coffee machine and filtered drinking water. Also included in the update: an expansion of the Regency Club to include a quiet zone, allowing guests a private dining and lounge experience. With more than 20 meeting rooms and 33,000 sq. ft. of meeting and event space, Hyatt Regency Calgary can customize space to meet guests’ needs and specifications. ALT Hotel – Downtown East Village - Scheduled opening: Fall 2018

Group Germain’s newest affordable luxury addition, the ALT Hotel, is nearing completion in Calgary’s trendy East Village. The ultra-modern 11-storey, 155-room hotel will feature spectacular views of the nearby Bow River and the downtown skyline from large loft-style windows. Modern guest rooms are feature king and double queen configurations, while 3,400 square feet of meeting space across five colourful rooms, the largest of which can accommodate up to 120 delegates, offers natural light and state-of-the-art technology. Nearby: Studio Bell at the National Music Centre, the Stampede and the Calgary Zoo – all of which offer exquisite space for offsite events.

Westin Calgary Airport

The Westin Calgary Airport - Scheduled opening: October 2018 (reservations beginning December 2018)

With 247 guestrooms, the Westin Calgary Airport will be located directly on Calgary International Airport property. The five-storey hotel will feature oversized soundproof windows with striking views of the airport, city and the Canadian Rockies. 30,000 sq. ft. of meeting space across two floors includes one of Calgary’s largest venues the 16,620-square-foot ballroom on the ground level which is divisible into four separate space.  This unique conference facility can be illuminated by natural light through floor-to-ceiling windows with airport views, while the expansive pre-function foyer runs the length of the ballroom, and a large entrance lets in vehicles for auto dealer exhibitions and trade shows.

Courtyard by Marriott and Autograph Collection - Scheduled opening: Fall 2020

Developers will break ground in Fall 2018 on the $100 million The Dorian Development—Calgary’s first new luxury hotel development in 20 years. The twin tower project will consist of the 180-room Courtyard by Marriott with upper floors occupied by a 120-room Marriott Autograph Collection hotel, the fourth Autograph property in Canada (Vancouver and Montréal each opened Autograph properties within the last year). Once complete, the 27-storey hotel will have 300 total rooms, a main-floor restaurant, conference facilities, fitness facility and a top-floor restaurant-lounge with an outdoor patio.

Residence Inn by Marriott Calgary Downtown - Scheduled opening: Early 2019

One of the largest Residence Inns in the world is under development in Calgary. The 34-story development will include 390 modern, long-stay suites complete with a full kitchen and separate living areas. Located at the corner of 10th and 5th Ave. SW, near Calgary’s downtown, the hotel will feature a 24-hour onsite food and beverage market, fitness facilities and an attached 10,000 sq. ft. SilverBirch Conference Centre offering all-inclusive meeting packages.

Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites Calgary South – Conference Centre  - Scheduled opening: Summer 2018

Calgary's newest hotel with 153 guestrooms has a central location close to the Chinook Centre mall with easy access to four major traffic thoroughfares. An onsite conference centre has 6,000 sq. ft. of venue space, comprised of a large ballroom with three meeting rooms.
