World AquaCulture Society to Convene in St. John's

St. John’s to Host Largest Aquaculture Conference in Canadian History

The World Aquaculture Society (WAS) recently signed an agreement to host the WAS North America Conference 2020 in partnership with the Aquaculture Association of Canada (AAC) and Newfoundland & Labrador Aquaculture Industry Association (NAIA). The WAS Aquaculture Conference, the largest of its kind ever held in Canada, will take place August 30 – September 2, 2020 in St. John’s, Newfoundland.

The combined international conference and exposition is expected to draw over 2,000 attendees from more than 100 countries. St. John’s, the eastern-most point in North America, and one of Canada’s most vibrant coastal cities, has long been a centre of excellence in aquaculture, having pioneered ocean harvesting since the earliest explorers set foot on Newfoundland.

From highly-skilled engineers, veterinarians and researchers to marine biologists, scientists and farmers, the men and women who work in St. John’s aquaculture industry are world-class experts in their fields, so it’s only fitting the World Aquaculture Society would choose to meet where the experts are. Mark Lane, Executive Director Newfoundland Aquaculture Industry Association agrees, "We are absolutely thrilled and honoured to be selected as the location for WAS North America 2020. To have Newfoundland and Labrador recognized for its potential as an aquaculture growth area globally is a milestone that we are proud of. We look forward to sharing our success stories as an industry and our beautiful province as a world-class destination with aquaculture enthusiasts spanning all areas of the globe in 2020".

St. John’s features 2,600 hotel rooms and some 100,000 square feet of meeting space. The WAS event will be headquartered at the 47,000 square foot St. John’s Convention Centre in colourful, downtown St. John’s. Learn more about meeting in Canada’s youngest province, here.
