St. John’s

Canada’s Oldest City

To and from St. John’s

As North America’s most easterly city, St. John’s is the closest Canadian city to Europe. Once on Newfoundland and Labrador’s Avalon Peninsula, you and your delegates will be in a prime spot for whale watching and iceberg spotting, and you’ll be near the 1,000-year-old Norse settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows — site of the first visit to North America by Europeans. In St. John’s

The city has a number of places to inspire your delegates and spark discussion. One is Signal Hill where Sergio Marconi received the first transatlantic wireless message and kickstarted the communication age. Another is the Spirit Garden at the Beothuk Interpretation Centre, a memorial to the Beothuk First Nation that has inhabited this land for generations.

Sectors

Natural resources make up a massive portion of St. John’s economy, as does oil and natural gas (both as a producer and a shipping port). Forestry is a major contributor to the local economy, too, as is a growing digital industries sector. Today, more than 165 companies in local digital industries employ over 6,400 people and generate more than $1.6 billion in GDP. (sourceicons.external-link-icon)
